    About the Program

Life skills are the fundamental building blocks for young people to realize their potential at home, at school, and in their communities.  Life skills programs provide a means of achieving important youth development outcomes, such as improved performance in school, increased literacy, finding and maintaining employment, and active citizenship.

The Fun-to-Learn program is an innovative CSR program with a mission to help children to enhance their life skills.  The program is developed based on the learning philosophy that children learn best when they are having fun.  Fun-to-Learn provides fun, experiential learning in a safe environment.  Children get to explore, discover and create while acquiring life skills that form the fundamental building blocks for realizing their own potential at home, at school, at work and in their community.

Fun-to-Learn is designed for children aged 7 to 12 years.  Blending fun, adventure and technology, the program creates environments and opportunities for children to develop into productive, responsible, caring and contributing members of society.

For TDM employees, the program provides an opportunity for them to contribute their talent and skills for community-building while developing their own personal capabilities.  The involvement of TDM personnel from across departments also creates opportunities for teambuilding.

The Fun-to-Learn CSR program started with a year long pilot run, involving an initial 39 children of Ladang Jaya, Setiu.  Tools and guidebooks for both facilitators and participants were developed for the purpose.  The children’s participation and progress are recorded and tracked.  Upon completion of the pilot in December 2009, the program will be assessed and improved before scaling up to include more children in other estates.

Following the induction program, 4 other modules have been planned for 2009.  The second module involved visit to the Planetarium in Kuala Terengganu to enhance the children’s appreciation of science and technology and to build their communication and presentation skills.  The second module was conducted at the Hutan Lipur Sekayu, Terengganu, to inculcate their interest in the environment and to appreciate the importance of rivers.  The module also aimed to build their thinking and problem solving skills.  The fourth module was held at the Pusat Latihan Kompleks Sungai Tong as part of the Hari Raya celebration.  The module aimed to cultivate critical thinking and problem solving skills and build communication skills through games, role play and group presentations.  The fifth module, which entails a 2-day 1-night camping program, was held in December 2009.
