A Familiarisation Tour to TDM Plantation Estates and Mill

It was an eye-opening experience for our team as they went for a one-and-a-half-day field visit to witness firsthand the complete value chain of operations; from oil palm cultivation to palm oil production and upstream processing alongside bio-organic fertiliser.

The trip was kicked off by a tour around Jaya and Fikri estates. Participants were shown some key aspects of plantation best management practices, including palm tree upkeep and maintenance, FFB harvesting and collection, and replanting processes – all amped up with mechanisation initiatives. The team also stopped by Tayor estate’s pre-nursery and nursery and even attempted to take a peek at the barn owl nesting box.

On the second day, the delegation visited Sungai Tong palm oil mill and made a tour around the facilities that showcased the different steps needed to separate the crude palm oil and palm kernel from the harvested fresh fruit bunch. The trip continued to Sungai Tong bio-organic fertiliser factory where the oil palm by-products, namely empty Fruit Bunch (EFB), sludge and Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME), are processed into an earth-like substance that contains balanced macro & micronutrients, making it highly suitable for plantation and agricultural application. The trip ended with a sneak peek at our biogas plant site, which upon completion will help to strengthen the existing oil refinery treatment system to avoid polluting the environment.

It is hoped that the visit has provided everyone with a better understanding of our works and better educate themselves about sustainable oil palm and the efforts behind it.
